Lesson structure

How a beginner course is structured

Lessons follow the IKO progression — each stage builds on the last, and you only move on once the one before feels natural. This is the same order whether you learn private or in a small group.

  1. Stage 1 · IKO Level 1

Safety & kite control on land

Wind theory, the safety systems, rigging and launching, then flying a kite on land until steering feels instinctive. Nothing on the water until this is solid.

  2. Stage 2 · IKO Level 2

    Power control & body dragging

Into the shallow water: controlling the kite's power, one-handed flying, self-rescue and body dragging to recover your board. The real foundation of riding.

  3. Stage 3 · IKO Level 3

    Water start & first rides

Board on your feet, timing the kite to get planing, and your first rides across the flat water. Short at first, then longer and more controlled.

  4. Stage 4 · Independence

    Riding upwind & self-sufficiency

Controlling speed, riding both directions and working back upwind so you return to where you started — the point where you can ride without constant supervision.

Equipment & safety

The gear you ride, and how we keep you safe

Every lesson includes modern, well-maintained equipment — kites and boards across the full size range, led by Duotone gear, matched to the wind and your size. School gear is available as a value option.

  • Flat, waist-deep lagoon water with no waves — mistakes are cheap here
  • Radio helmets, so your instructor talks you through every step in real time
  • Rescue boat on standby during lessons
  • Helmet, flotation vest and safety leash on every session
  • We do not teach in unsafe or unusable wind — hours are rescheduled instead

Certification

An IKO Affiliated Center since 2017

The International Kiteboarding Organization is the sport's main global standards body — the closest thing kitesurfing has to PADI in diving. Valampuri has held IKO Center No. 86041 since October 2017.

  • Lessons follow the official IKO curriculum and safety standards
  • You are assessed against IKO Levels 1–3 as you progress
  • Your IKO certificate (€25) is recognised by schools and rental operators worldwide

Questions

Before you book

How many hours will I need?

Most complete beginners need 6 to 9 hours spread over 3 to 5 days. The 9-hour IKO course takes most students from zero to their first independent rides. Some people need a few extra hours — that is normal, not a failure.

Private or group — which should I choose?

Private is faster because every minute is yours. Group (max two students) costs less and suits couples or friends learning together. For complete beginners we usually recommend private instruction for the first hours.

What if the wind drops during my course?

We reschedule your remaining hours within your stay where possible. We would rather move a lesson than teach in conditions where you learn nothing.

Can I keep riding after the course?

Yes — book extra coaching hours (€50/hour private), supervised practice, or move on to equipment rental once you are independent.
