Kalpitiya conditions

Two wind seasons, different experiences

We will not promise wind every day — but Kalpitiya's two seasons make it one of the most reliable places in Asia to learn and ride.

Strong summer-season kitesurfing conditions on Kalpitiya Lagoon

Summer season

Roughly May – October

Strong, consistent south-west wind almost daily. Suits everyone from first-timers to advanced riders, and it is when Vella Island and Dream Spot trips run most often.

Calm winter-season boat ride at sunset on Kalpitiya Lagoon

Winter season

Roughly December – March

Lighter north-east wind and quieter water. A relaxed time to learn with fewer riders on the lagoon, and pleasant conditions for partners and families.

Kite holidays

Lessons, room, meals and rest — one base, one booking

Staying where you learn makes a kite trip simpler: no daily transfers, gear stored at the centre, meals after sessions and a pool for the low-wind hours. Packages combine lessons or rental with accommodation and half board.

  • Solo traveller packages
  • Couples learning together
  • Non-kiting partner options
  • Three, five and seven-day stays

Kite spots

Ride more than one lagoon

Kalpitiya is a cluster of spots, not a single beach. These are the four we visit most.

For partners

Coming with someone who does not kitesurf?

They will have a better time than you think. While you are on the water, the resort offers a pool, restaurant, gardens, lagoon boat trips, birdwatching and quiet corners to read or work. Evenings are shared — sunsets here are the good kind.

Questions

Before you ask — the honest answers

Is Kalpitiya suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The lagoon offers flat, waist-deep water, open space and steady seasonal wind, which is why so many people choose Kalpitiya for their first lessons. Beginners always train with an instructor and rescue support nearby.

How many hours of lessons will I need?

Most complete beginners need around 9–12 hours to reach independent riding. Our 9-hour IKO Level 3 course covers safety, kite control, body dragging and water starts. Some people need a few extra hours, and that is normal.

What is included in a lesson?

All lessons include the kite, board, harness, helmet with radio communication, instructor time and third-party insurance. Boat transfers to the teaching area are included on courses of 6 hours or more.

When should I visit?

Kalpitiya has two wind seasons: roughly May to October (summer) and December to March (winter). Summer brings the strongest, most consistent wind; winter is lighter and calmer. Beginners can learn in both.

Can my partner come if they do not kitesurf?

Yes, and many do. The resort has a pool, restaurant, gardens and lagoon trips, so non-kiting partners have a proper holiday rather than a waiting room. There is a dedicated non-kiter guide on this site.

Where will I stay?

Valampuri Kitesurfing is based at Valampuri Resort on the lagoon, with rooms, chalets and dorm options. You can book lessons only, or a package that combines lessons, accommodation and meals.

What happens if there is not enough wind?

We do not teach in unsafe or unusable conditions. If the wind drops, we reschedule your hours within your stay where possible. Unused prepaid lesson hours are handled fairly — ask us for the current policy when booking.
