What makes Kalpitiya work

Kalpitiya sits on a peninsula between the Indian Ocean and a huge shallow lagoon on Sri Lanka's north-west coast. The lagoon is the reason it became the country's kite capital: flat, mostly waist-deep water with steady seasonal wind and room to spread out.

When to come

Two seasons, most of the year covered

Summer (roughly May–October) brings strong, consistent south-west wind nearly every day — prime time for everyone. Winter (roughly December–March) is lighter and calmer, with quieter water that beginners often love.

From the airport to the lagoon

Kalpitiya is about 130 km north of Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) — typically 3 to 3.5 hours by road. Options, honestly compared:

Private transfer — simplest, door to door; we can arrange pickup timed to your flight
Bus — cheapest, via Puttalam, slower and less comfortable with luggage and kite gear
Self-drive or taxi apps — workable; the last stretch is rural roads

Off the water

Rest days and non-kiters

Kalpitiya is still mostly fishing villages, coconut palms and quiet coastline. Between sessions there are lagoon boat rides, kayaking, dolphin watching in season, and long unhurried meals.
